"There are two types of people in this world: Those who hate drama, and those who say they hate drama."? Well, just being honest, I have been both. Not that either define me, and to be perfectly honest I do dislike drama (and all of it's ridiculous side effects), but, to my shame, I've played the game before.
I am currently reading "Enough" by Kate Conner. Any book I can get my hands on, that I can read while walking at a leisurely after-dinner pace of 2.1mph on the treadmill, is gold. It makes the time pass.
This book, though, is doing more than pass the time. It's challenging me.
On the chapter about teenage girl drama (very fascinating thing to analyze, by the way), she talks about the antidote to drama: a Passion and a Purpose.
Drama is a pass-time that occupies many girl's lives, because it's a "temporary fill". However, when that time is instead taken up with a greater purpose, a higher passion, an Incredible God, then the drama slowly fades from the picture.
Kate speaks right to the fact that we Crave adventure : we don't want a mundane life! But her writing causes me to ask myself: what kind of adventure have I been living out lately? Have I been settling for the have-to-be-in-the-know and my-little-world-is-all-that-matters imitation of adventure? Or have I been looking up and looking out, seeking first the Kingdom of God, and taking hold of the great adventure He is calling me to?
On page 82, Kate writes, "Passion and adventure work like force fields against drama; idle words and worries get zapped and dropped to the ground by their extravagant hope and possibility. Maturity is not boring or lesser or tamer-- it's greater... Let it in. Let is move (us). If (we) want to catch the fire, (we're) going to have to put (ourselves) near a flame."
It causes me to think of two of my favorite Scriptures that go hand-in-hand.
1 Thessalonians 5:19, "Do not put out the Spirit's fire."
and
2 Timothy 1:14, "Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you -- guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us."
Both of these challenge me: Don't be satisfied with "normal". Don't get your fix from a "temporary fill." Seek out the legit stuff, the real, soul-satisfying way to live your life: to the Glory of God.
And get ready: because a life in full pursuit of God is a Breath-taking Adventure!
